The Rowans AP Academy

Inspiring change for a brighter future

Humanities

Students in KS3 are given the opportunity to learn about the world around them, and where they can investigate the relevance and importance of Humanities on their own lives. We offer a practical, student-led investigation approach by delivering exciting lessons which will stimulate enthusiasm to learning about history and geography.

Each term we alternate the subject from History to Geography. Learning is focused on a variety of tasks which will allow pupils to develop thinking skills and independent learning. During these lessons, students will be encouraged to look at the world around them, past and present, and analyse how and why the world is the way it is, and how they have a role to play in how the world will work in the future.

Rewards:

In April 2022, pupils who had been consistently hardworking were rewarded with a trip to Colchester Zoo. Not only was this a reward trip, but also a unique learning experience. Pupils were able to explore the zoo, learn about the different habitats, learn about how some habitats have had to adapt due to climate change, and some were even able to feed giraffes and elephants, and overall was an amazing experience for all involved.

History:

During our history lessons we will look at a range of topics such as, War, The Holocaust, Women in history, Black History Month, The Tudors, Pre-historic life, worldwide diseases and more.

Geography:

During our Geography lessons we will look at a range of topics; Urbanisation, Population, the 7 continents, Volcanoes, Earthquakes, Tsunamis, map work, The Slums, Climate change, travel, and tourism and many more.

Sequencing:

The Humanities sequencing has been developed to cover all the key topics over a two-year period, which pupils will explore. Each year, the sequencing document will be displayed on the back of pupils’ books to allow them to track their progression and make links to previous lessons.
