Term 1

  • Independent L6 careers advisor delivery plan checked and agreed with Careers Leader. BM1.
  • Careers policies reviewed and checked by Headteacher. BM1.
  • Careers budgets finalised. BM1
  • All contracts signed and payments raised with finance. BM1.
  • Working party for Careers and Aspirations 1st meeting and action plan to be shared. Pupil allocations to be made and ‘Careers Pro-forma’ worksheets shared for completion by the end of term 1. BM3.
  • 1st day of term pupil aspiration setting and review from term 6. Form pupil aspirations posters to be in place to state pupils’ goals to reach their aspirations. This is to be revisited every term, within form time, to see if they have changed or been achieved and then updated and discussed between pupils and form staff. Staff to communicate their findings through staff meetings. Working party for Careers and Aspirations to agree how to monitor and support form tutors to help pupils set and achieve their goals. BM3.
  • Year 11 to have ‘Careers Support meetings’ in school with their, Working Party for Careers and Aspirations, mentor with outcomes communicated in weekly reports to parents/ carers. BM3.

  • Work experience for year 10 from 11th - 15th October 2021. Allocations for all of year 10 to be finalised and table of tasks to complete written by year 10 form TA’s ready to action. Form tutors to have visited then once during their weeks work experience and to have phoned to check progress on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. All phone calls to be made by 10am.   • Year 11 Drop Down Careers Carousel – A carousel of interview skills, practice interview, CV writing, teambuilding and investigating job roles.

  • Careers advisor starts on the 9th September with Compass Plus review and input, she then goes onto carry out small group meetings for KS3 and KS4 to build relationships and gauge an understanding of what interests and motivates our pupils to progress and succeed. Building a picture of interests to be able to use in the future when writing personal statements. BM8.
  • Careers advisor starts The Rowans Job Shop noticeboard to show the local job market. BM2.

  • DT: Careers in the environmental / sustainability industry – energy supply, waste, management, resource maintenance etc. Discussing careers in the CAD / CAM sector. BM4.
  • PSHE: Pupils learn about personal safety and healthy lifestyles this is related to the world of work where maintaining this is important. BM4.
  • STEM: Focus on electrical engineering/CAD technician. BM4.
  • English: Exploring careers linked to poets and poetry. BM4.
  • Humanities: There are opportunities to link humanities to ‘real life’ applications. BM4.
  • Maths: There are opportunities to link maths to ‘real life’ applications. BM4.
  • Land Based Studies: LBS pupils will have the opportunity to take part in a virtual discussion/workshop introducing the land-based sector. Further education and careers opportunities will be discussed. BM4 & 5.
  • ASDAN: Discussions and research around: Prison Officers, Policemen, Firefighters, Special Forces. BM4 & 5.
  • Sport: BTEC Sport unit 2 focuses on jobs as sports officials and coaches. During lessons roles are discussed with pupils. This then leads to pupils researching details such as requirements and salaries. BM4.
  • PSHE: Pupils learn about personal safety and healthy lifestyles this is related to the world of work where maintaining this is important. KS4 cover this in small groups throughout the year. BM4.

  • Art: GCSE Art pupils will have the opportunity to take part in an external workshop and a guided tour at UCA. Further education and careers opportunities will be discussed. BM4 & 7.

Term  2

  • All year 11 to have had at least 1 meeting with the careers advisor, either in a small group or 1:1, to discuss initial plans and set research tasks for pupils to do before their next meeting. BM8.
  • Year 10 and KS3 to have ‘Careers Support meetings’ in school with their form tutors and TA’s and ‘Careers Support sheet’ communicated in weekly reports to parents/ carers. BM3.

  • PSHE: Pupils look at rights and responsibilities, discrimination, gender stereo types and cultural expectations within both school and the workplace. BM4 & 2.
  • Science: Personal trainer. BM4.
  • English: Exploring local successful English writers.
  • Art: Joseph Albers. Show “Yale University Art Gallery Poster-1977”. BM4.
  • Food tech: We look at the takeaway industry and the manufacturing process. BM4.
  • DT: Understanding H & S rules and learning to carry out Risk Assessments for the workplace. Timber / man-made board suppliers (B&Q / Travis Perkins etc) How is timber sourced, stocked, supplied, sold? Career opportunities discussed and site visits conducted. BM4.

 

 

  • Land Based Studies: LBS pupils will have the opportunity to visit Changing Lives through Horses. A working -tables. Opportunities and careers within this sector will be discussed. BM4, 5 & 6.
  • Travel and Tourism: External travel and tourism speaker to talk to pupils about the travel industry. Write a report to the council on recommendations for improvements to increase appeal to your area. BM4.
  • Science: Chemistry link to Crown Estates. BM4.
  • ASDAN: Create a job advert for a uniformed service job of your choice. BM4.
  • AQA Food: Different types of chef and the cuisine they cook. BM4.
  • English: CV writing. BM4.
  • Engineering: Focus CAD developer. This is covered through section 2 of the portfolio. BM4.
  • Construction: Focus on site safety manager, project manager roles, development and apprenticeships throughout. BM4.
  • Art: GCSE Art pupils will have the opportunity to visit The Turner Contemporary art Gallery. Opportunities and careers within the art and design sector will be discussed. BM4.
  • DT: Pupils develop skills in working with a variety of materials and processes. Links made to associated careers and pupils to begin to identify their areas of strength, preference and expertise. BM4.
  • Media: Discussions of the careers associated to the film industry. BM4.
  • GCSE Art & design: pupils will be introduced to the student resources section of the TATE website. We will discuss careers and opportunities within the arts. BM4 & 5.

Term  3

  • Continued college tours for MKC. BM7.
  • All year 11 to have had at least 1 meeting with the career’s advisor, and some 2 meetings where needed, to discuss progress of initial plans and research. Careers advisor to have started applications to College places and apprenticeships as they get short of spaces later on in the year. Research ongoing by careers advisor. BM8.
  • Working Party for Careers and Aspirations meeting to discuss the individual needs of all year 11 pupils. Target set and actions points noted for completion within the term. Review aspiration boards and how form tutors are monitoring and supporting pupils to achieve their goals.BM3.
  • Apprenticeship Week 7-13 February – Apprenticeship talk by CXK 11am for KS4 10th February. BM2, 3, 5, 8.
  • NCS year 11 talk in term 3. lunch sign-up stand in hall for registrations. BM3.
  • All year 9 and 10 pupils surveyed to review subjects wanted for next year. Post survey meeting with SLT to discuss actions to be taken.   • PSHE: Pupils look at and Discusses racism, religious discrimination and human rights within the world of work. BM4.
  • Food tech: Look at the bakery sector, a baker’s role and how this looks as a job. BM4.
  • Art: Local artist to talk to pupils about a career within the digital arts industry. BM4 & 5.

 

  • Land Based Studies: Visit to horticultural college. Work experience at Kent Life to continue for 2 terms at least. BM4, 5, 6 & 7.

  • Construction: Focus on project manager roles, development and apprenticeships throughout. BM4.
  • Art: Local artist to talk to pupils about a career within the digital arts industry. BM4 & 5.
  • English: Looking at famous poets/writers and their education. BM4.
  • ASDAN: Careers as a chef, retail assistant, nutritionist etc. BM4.
  • DT: Discussing careers in the CAD / CAM sector. BM4.
  • Media: Trip to studio to see how design and production of media in action. BM4.
  • Science: trip to Dungeness power station or virtual tour if restrictions are still in place. BM4, 5 & 6.
  • Travel and Tourism: Customer service focus. Developing customer facing needs. BM4.
  • AQA food: The hospitality industry as a first job and beyond.

Term  4

  • Whole school Academic Review Day 25st February – careers advisor in attendance. BM3, 8.
  • National careers week 9 - 11 March. Links to local businesses for all option groups where a small group can meet with professionals in the appropriate field of work to discuss career prospects. BM5.
  • British Science week 11 – 20 March. BM4, 5.
  • Year 11 Revision Event - dates 31 to 1 April 2021. Main purpose is to concentrate English and maths revision for all year 11 pupils. Running key interventions alongside inventive and memorable revision tasks. BM3.
  • Option Carousel for KS3 with year 10 assisting teachers to run the event or assembly to introduce option offer for next year. BM4, 3.
  • All Year 11 applications to be made and most pupils to have a plan A and B in place. BM8, 3, 7.

  • Science: Science Week encompassing areas from STEM, ecology, and SMCH. A variety of jobs are discussed whilst completing workshops from engineers to foot technology ecologists. BM4 & 5.
  • STEM: Focus on Architect roles in conjunction with QA roles. BM4.
  • English: Exploring famous poets/writers and careers in the theatre. BM4.
  • DT: Learning to use wood working hand tools in the workshop (marking, cutting, sanding). Identifying how these skills can be utilised within different jobs. BM4.
  • PSHE: KS3  unit looks at mental wellbeing and how we can promote positive mental health How promoting positive self-concept, identifying personal strengths. BM4.
  • Food tech: Look at the Farming sector and what it entails as a job.  BM4.

 

  • Land Based Studies: Lesson on careers that use the skills taught in the growing plants unit. Interior plant designer, window display designer, Gardener, Garden centre assistant, landscaper and Garden designer. BM4.
  • ASDAN: Research careers professionals in the catering industry including. BM4.

  • DT: Trips to timber yard, B&Q etc. to purchase materials for final projects. Pupils to explore how materials are sourced, stocked, sold, priced etc. and to see first-hand job opportunities in these areas. BM4 &5

  • PSHE: KS3 explores Professional relationships with in the work place and how these are different from other relationships. BM4.

 

 

  • Land Based Studies: LBS pupils will choose different specialisms within the land-based sector and create posters on careers within LBS. BM4.
  • English: Researching further education applications and personal statements. BM4 & 7.
  • ASDAN: Pupils will have the opportunity to research many careers working outdoors.  BM4.
  • DT: Learning to use a variety of working hand tools in the workshop (marking, cutting, sanding). Identifying how these skills can be utilised within different jobs. BM4.
  • Engineering: Focus on Quality assurance roles. This is covered through section 5 of the portfolio. BM4.
  • Construction: Focus on site supervisor roles, labourer (CSCS) and apprenticeships throughout. BM4.
  • Media: Visit to MKC Media department to show post 16 destination options. BM4 & 7.
  • Travel and Tourism: Employment created by Travel and Tourism industries. Activities to support learning around expenditure for business.  BM4.
  • Science: Environmental sciences and careers within the sector. Medical center jobs and careers related to the medical profession. BM4.
  • AQA and GCSE food: Research and building portfolios of skills which can be used moving forward. BM4.
  • Sport: BTEC Sport Unit 4 focuses on job roles in sports psychology. Pupils research different job roles and understand the roles they play in the industry. Guest speaker (personal trainer). BM4 & 5.

 

Term  6

  • Review and evaluate Working Party for Careers and Aspirations meeting to discuss the individual needs of all year 11 pupils what went well and what can be improved upon. Target set and actions points noted for completion within the term and hand over to careers leader for transition follow up. BM3.
  • Application for Transition fund if available. BM3.
  • Transition meetings with all future MKC pupils, parents and Lyne/ Maria. BM3,1.

  • STEM: Focus on Maintenance engineer roles, STEM collage of careers. BM4.
  • English: Exploring careers linked to careers that historically explore English and the English language. BM4.
  • DT: Learning how to work with concrete (casting, mold making, finishing) Identifying how these skills can be utilised within different trades. New material experience may influence career choices (building trades, sculpting etc). BM4.
  • PSHE: This KS3 unit living in the wider world covers advertisement in the retail sector consumer rights and financial risks and decisions. BM4.
  • Food tech: Recap on the food industry in the UK. The jobs available and the importance to the UK economy. BM4.
  • Art: KS3 pupils will choose different specialisms within the art and design sector and create posters on careers with the arts. BM4.
  • Land Based Studies: LBS pupils will have the opportunity to visit a retail store linked to LBS – discussion about how these products link to various careers and professions in LBS will take place. BM4 & 5.
  • English: Exploring local successful English writers. BM4.
  • ASDAN: investigate different types of job opportunities in the travel and tourism industry. BM4.
  • Travel and Tourism: external visit to local holiday attraction. BM4.
  • AQA and GCSE food: Recap on the food industry in the UK. The jobs available and the importance to the UK economy. BM4.
  • DT: community project working in a real-life context on a DT project. This was previously making ‘Mud Kitchens’ for our local primary school. To support pupils on college tours, visits, applications BM4, 5 & 7.
  • Engineering: Focus on Quality assurance roles. This is covered through section 5 of the portfolio. BM4.
  • Construction: Focus on Quantity surveyor, labourer (CSCS) and apprenticeships throughout. BM4.

 

Summer holiday

  • Review destinations and transition meetings booked. BM3.
  • Continually remind pupils and parents of dates for interviews, transition meetings at college and other providers. BM3, 7.
  • Attend enrolment and transition meetings to ensure attendance by pupils. BM3,7.
  • Help with bursary applications when needed. BM3.
