The Rowans AP Academy

Inspiring change for a brighter future

Headteacher's Message

Following our Ofsted judgement of Outstanding in February 2015, we have been working hard to continue improving in all areas of Academy life.  All staff at The Rowans are committed to keeping up to date with the ever changing educational landscape and pedagogy.

I am immensely proud of all pupils and staff for their continued commitment and hard work.  Winning Kent Messenger Team of the Year in May 2016 was the recognition that the staff team deserved.  They are quite simply an inspiration.  In June 2017, they were awarded The Silver Pearson’s teaching award for ‘Team of the Year’, and I was overjoyed when they won the gold Pearson's teaching award in October 2017.  This is an overwhelming accolade for them all.

The Rowans is a provision which enables young people to change the direction of their lives and I am honoured to be the Headteacher of such a provision. The Rowans is an alternative provision, which provides an exciting education for 11-16 year olds who have been permanently excluded or at risk of permanent exclusion from their mainstream schools. The Rowans provides another chance for young people to access education, make progress and change the direction of their lives.

The pupils are equally inspiring, we learn from each other daily in a culture which demonstrates and encourages kindness, forgiveness and acceptance.  The social, moral, cultural and spiritual development of our learners is of the utmost importance to us all and we provide many opportunities for these elements to be exploited and built upon.

It is our aim to return pupils to a mainstream school where possible, we understand that this isn’t always possible or appropriate but is a key priority for The Rowans.  The Headteachers of the Medway mainstream schools are keen to work collaboratively to give all pupils a chance to succeed in mainstream schools.

We work to ensure the education pupils receive whilst at The Rowans is tailored to meet their individual needs and designed to give them the skills to improve their life chances. All pupils have every opportunity to gain qualifications for their future.

The length of stay at The Rowans for pupils is dependent upon their individual pathway.  We are pleased to be able to work closely with our local mainstream schools who offer pupils a chance to reintegrate.  The relationship between The Rowans and all schools is built around trust, professionalism and a shared desire and responsibility to offer the right provision at the right time.

The Rowans is a place where young people can learn through supportive interaction, experience and success.  We provide a safe environment for both young people and staff so that the emphasis can be placed upon growing, learning and fulfilling the potential that exists.

We are ready to work as a team to transform education and experiences and to show our pupils that they can lead happy and successful lives.  Together with Trustees, staff and pupils, we have formulated our academy values which we base our daily school life on: to attend and arrive on time, be kind and respectful to all, to behave appropriately and to treat others fairly and with respect.

As Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Education is the key to eliminating gender inequality, to reducing poverty, to creating a sustainable planet, to preventing needless deaths and illness, and to fostering peace”. Here at The Rowans we believe strongly in the view that education is a powerful tool to change the course of a young person’s life.
